The Ann Arbor Jewish community recently welcomed its newest ShinShinim (young Israeli emissaries), Mia and Hadar, who arrived at Detroit Metropolitan Airport on Friday, August 14, after a long journey from Israel. Their year-long stay will focus on building connections with local families, schools and community organizations while sharing Israeli culture and experiences.

After settling into Ann Arbor, Mia and Hadar quickly began getting to know the community and planning programs for the months ahead. Their first public appearance was at the Jewish Community Center’s annual Apples and Honey Festival, where they led a hands-on craft activity for children and families.

Community members will have several opportunities to meet the pair this fall. They are expected to participate in the Hebrew Day School’s annual community apple picking outing on Sunday, September 20, and will lead the first Jewish Storytime of the year at the Ann Arbor District Library on Sunday, October 11.

Beginning on Sunday, November 8, Mia and Hadar will join this year’s Same Moon project, which connects Ann Arbor Jewish families with elementary school-aged children to families in Nahalal, Israel, fostering friendships and cultural exchange across continents.

During their year in Ann Arbor, the ShinShinim will live with local host families and participate in Shabbat dinners and other community events.
