Joelle Abramowitz – Immediate Past President
Joelle Abramowitz is a New Jersey native who made her way to Ann Arbor in 2016 via Washington DC, Brussels, Hong Kong, Chicago, and Seattle. She is a PhD economist and works at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research. Joelle has held a number of roles in the Jewish communities where she has lived and has written for several Jewish online outlets. She is currently secretary of the executive board of the Jewish Federation of Greater Ann Arbor. In her spare time, she is an avid cyclist and bike commuter and enjoys cooking, baking, writing her foodie email newsletter, The Gastronomist Economist, as well as hiking, tangoing, and promoting financial literacy.
Sheira Cohen is a PhD student in classical archaeology at the University of Michigan. She is originally from New Zealand but has been in Ann Arbor for the past six years and will likely be here a few more years still. Sheira been attending events with JYP for several years and in the last two years has been helping run the group’s Facebook page and planning events with the Board. In her spare time, she likes musical theatre, science fiction and fantasy, puzzles, and getting out into nature.
Sydney Fine is a Master of Public Health student studying Global Health Epidemiology and conducting research on respiratory viruses. Before moving to Michigan, Sydney lived in Seattle doing research on HIV, teaching religious school, and singing in the Seattle Jewish chorale. When she’s not thinking about viruses, you can usually find Sydney in her kitchen cooking or baking new recipes. Sydney is super excited to help plan innovative programs and welcome many new people into the JYP community this year.
Evan Frenklak moved to Michigan for an engineering job in 2019. He joined JYP that summer for a bike ride to Ypsi, and has enjoyed attending outdoors events ever since. Evan is looking forward to Shabbat with the group this upcoming year, especially during the warm months when the weather allows for gathering at Ann Arbor’s varied and numerous parks.
Originally from Chicago, Ariella Hoffman-Peterson recently moved to Ann Arbor to start a PhD at University of Michigan’s School of Public Health. Since graduating from Northwestern University, She has lived in New York and Chicago, working in clinical research and biotech. As a Moishe House and Base Hillel frequent in those cities, she can’t wait to get to know the Ann Arbor Jewish community through joining the JYP board! Ariella is excited to do food and craft projects, Shabbat dinners, Kabbalat Shabbats, and holiday celebrations together.
Robert Stern grew up in Oak Park, Michigan. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Michigan. He is an entrepreneur and is the founder of KTR DENTAL, importing and distributing dental instruments from Israel, Switzerland and Lichtenstein. Rob is also a founder and is the CEO of Fusion Digital Solutions, a metal 3D printing facility specializing in dental prosthetics and devices. Rob moved to Ann Arbor in 2015, taking the long route from Oak Park via New York. Rob has been on the Ann Arbor Federation board for the last year and on various committees: campaign, allocations, and finance. Rob is looking forward to another productive JYP year hopefully with more in person events. For the last ten years, Rob has been a volunteer and corporate sponsor of American Friends of Dental Volunteers for Israel, and he has facilitated the donation of tens of thousands of dental instruments to the DVI clinic in Jerusalem. In his free time, he enjoys traveling and has briefly lived in Helsinki, Hong Kong and Israel.
Josh Weiss has a long-standing devotion to the Jewish communities of Metro Detroit and more recently to the Greater Ann Arbor area. He is an Imports Compliance Analyst for a global freight forwarding organization which has a reputable presence here in the Metro Detroit/Ann Arbor area(s). He recently completed his MBA concentrating in Supply Chain and Information Systems Management from Wayne State University. In his spare time, he enjoys being active, traveling domestically and abroad, spending time with family and friends, and in the summer months kayaking / tubing at both Argo and Gallup parks. He has been actively involved with JYP since 2018 and has firsthand seen the tremendous growth of this group over the past few years. For 2021-2022, Josh is most excited to see this growth trend continue and be able to work firsthand with other passionate board members towards common goals, as well as continuing the work of building vibrant Jewish community in the greater Ann Arbor area.
