In every JCRC newsletter issue, we’ll spotlight one of our coalition partners. This time, we’re excited to feature Reverand Carnel Richardson, Pastor from the Metropolitan Memorial Baptist Church at Ypsilanti and a founding member of our Black-Jewish Coalition.
Q: What inspired you to get involved?
A: I joined the Coalition of Black and Jewish Unity in Washtenaw County for two reasons. The first reason is that I was asked by my friend and colleague, Rabbi Asher Lopatin, whom I deeply respect. The second and most important reason is that I see the value in both the Black and Jewish communities to be allies in the work of achieving social and economic justice through education and empowerment.
Q: What’s your favorite Black-Jewish coalition memory?
A: My favorite Black-Jewish Coalition memory is the Freedom Seder that was hosted last spring by the coalition. That event allowed for warm fellowship and education for both communities. That event provided an opportunity for participants from the Black and Jewish communities to meet new people and make new connections.
Q: What are you looking forward to as the coalition grows?
A: As this coalition grows, I am looking forward to more opportunities for fellowship between both communities. I look forward to the coalition having a prominent voice in conversations that promote a high quality of life in Washtenaw County.
Q: What do you hope the black community gains from this Coalition?
A: I am hoping the Black community gains more opportunities to learn more about the Jewish community. I am also hoping that the Black community can strengthen our capacity to overcome oppression and to build community through this partnership.
