Did you know that more than half of U.S. adults don’t have a will? For many people, creating a will is something they’ve been meaning to do, but simply haven’t gotten around to. That’s why August is recognized as National Make-A-Will Month: a timely reminder to take this important step for the people, pets, and causes you care about.
Creating or updating a will is one of the most powerful ways to protect your loved ones, make your wishes known, and ensure your values are reflected in your plans for the future. It can also provide an opportunity to leave a lasting gift to a nonprofit or community organization that has been meaningful to you.
- Decide Who Gets What
A will allows you to determine who receives your belongings and other assets. You can leave specific items to particular people and designate who will inherit the remainder of your estate. - Protect Your Children
For parents of minor children, a will provides an opportunity to name a guardian who can care for your children if you are no longer able to do so. Without a will, that decision may ultimately be left to the courts. - Help Prevent Family Conflict
Having a clear, legally documented plan can reduce confusion and disagreements among family members. A will allows you to choose who will manage your estate and clearly communicate how you want your assets distributed. - Leave a Lasting Legacy
A will can help you continue supporting the people, causes, and institutions that have meant the most to you throughout your life. You can designate charitable gifts, establish scholarships, or support community programs, creating a legacy that can make a difference for generations to come. - Plan for Your Digital Life
Our lives increasingly exist online, from email and social media accounts to digital photographs and other important files. Your estate plan can include instructions for how you want your digital accounts and assets handled and designate someone you trust to manage them. - Make a Plan for Your Pets
Your pets are part of your family, and a will can help ensure they are cared for after you’re gone. You can designate someone to take care of them and, where appropriate, provide financial resources for their ongoing care. - Gain Peace of Mind
Perhaps one of the greatest benefits of creating a will is the peace of mind that comes with knowing you’ve made a plan. A will helps ensure your wishes are clearly communicated and can provide comfort and clarity for the people you love.
If you don’t have a will, August is a great time to get started. If you’re unsure where to begin, the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Ann Arbor, part of the Jewish Federation, is here to support you on your planning journey. You can also consult with your estate planning attorney or financial advisor to explore your options and create a plan that’s right for you.
And if you already have a will, don’t assume it’s still up to date. Estate planning experts generally recommend reviewing your estate plan every few years and after major life changes, such as moving, getting married or divorced, welcoming children or grandchildren, or experiencing significant changes in your finances.
This August, take 15 minutes to think about your future. Whether you’re creating your first will or simply reviewing the one you already have, taking this step today can help protect the people and causes you care about for years to come.
For those who are passionate about strengthening the Jewish community, including a charitable gift in your estate plans can be a meaningful way to ensure the organizations and programs you value continue to thrive in the future. The Greater Ann Arbor Jewish community is proud to participate in the Life & Legacy® program, an initiative that empowers individuals and families to create a lasting impact by including a legacy gift to one or more of 11 local Jewish organizations: Ann Arbor Orthodox Minyan, Beth Israel Congregation, Chabad House of Ann Arbor, Eastern Michigan University Center for Jewish Studies, Hebrew Day School of Ann Arbor, Jewish Community Center of Greater Ann Arbor, Jewish Cultural Society, Jewish Family Services of Washtenaw County, Jewish Federation of Greater Ann Arbor, Temple Beth Emeth, and University of Michigan Hillel.
