SUMMARY:The Three Paths to Salvation of Paul the Jew
DESCRIPTION:A Virtual Book Review of Gabriele Boccaccini’s Paul’s Three Path’s to Salvation \nWhat did Paul\, as an apocalyptic Jew and follower of Jesus\, think about the concept of Salvation? Paul did not convert nor break with his inherited traditions but was part of the lively diversity of Second Temple Judaism. Boccaccini’s ‘Paul’s Three Paths to Salvation’ is an attempt to reconcile the many facets of Paul’s complex Jewish identity while reclaiming him from accusations of intolerance. Dr. Simon will explore the legacy of the hatred of Jews during the Holocaust and how and why it continues to impact the globe. She will also address the current impact of the evolution of antisemitism on perceptions of Zionism and anti-Zionism. \nThis program is presented by the Israel Center @ the J in partnership with the Eastern Michigan University Center for Jewish Studies and the University of Michigan Frankel Center for Judaic Studies. Dr. Martin Shichtman\, director of the EMU Center for Jewish Studies and professor in the EMU Department of English will introduce Dr. Simon\, and Dr. Jeff Veidlinger\, the Joseph Brodsky Collegiate Professor of History and Judaic Studies and Director of the Frankel Center for Judaic Studies will moderate the question and answer period. \nThere is no charge to participate but please register to secure the online event. SUMMARY:Frankel Institute Event Series: Stranger Still: Translating Contemporary Poetry from Israel/Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Rita Kogan\, Alex Moshkin and Zackary Sholem Berger \nThis series showcases the diversity of poetic voices from Israel/Palestine through the lens of translation. Each event features a multilingual poetry reading and a conversation between poets and translators on the careful negotiations that are involved in the act of translation\, highlighting work that creates its own currents against and beyond the Israeli mainstream. \nRita Kogan is a feminist poet and translator in Israel\, producing original verse in Hebrew and translations from her native Russian. Born in Leningrad in 1976 and immigrating to Israel in 1990\, Kogan explores the challenges that Russian-speaking women encounter in their daily life in Israel\, including ethnic discrimination\, sexual abuse\, and the difficulty of expressing sexuality in a patriarchal society. In her poems\, we also encounter a poet full of joie-de-vivre\, one who revels in love and literature. She is the author of Rishayon li-shegiot ketiv (License to Misspell\, 2015) and Sus bahatzait (Horse in a Skirt\, 2018)\, a runner-up for the prestigious Gardner Simon Prize for Hebrew poetry\, and translator of works by Anna Akhmatova\, Marina Tsvetaeva\, Osip Mandelstam\, Joseph Brodsky\, and others. \nAlex Moshkin is a Fellow at the Frankel Institute for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. His book project\, Russophone Culture in Israel: In Search of Identity\, analyzes contemporary Russian literature\, cinema\, and visual art in Israel. He is also currently working on an English-language anthology of contemporary Russian-Israeli poetry. \nZackary Sholem Berger is a poet and translator in Baltimore working in and among English\, Yiddish\, and Hebrew\, with occasional forays into other languages.
