SUMMARY:Jewish Book Series: Lunch & Learn with Yishay Ishi Ron
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at the JCC on **Tuesday\, June 9** from **12-1:30 PM** for an\nin-person Lunch & Learn and a virtual visit from Yishay Ishi Ron\, author of\n_Dog_. Enjoy a delicious lunch while listening to Yishay speak about his book\nover Zoom. \n_Dog_ is a raw\, unflinching novel\, drawing on the author’s own experiences as\na former elite IDF combat officer suffering from PTSD and addiction. The story\nfollows Geller\, a decorated soldier who returns from Gaza to Tel Aviv only to\nbe haunted by the trauma of combat — including the memory of a soldier killing\na dog in the field. Haunted and estranged from family and comrades\, Geller\nspirals into heroin addiction\, living in the underbelly of Tel Aviv among\nmisfit junkies. \nHis life takes a turn when a stray dog enters his world. Initially\nindifferent\, Geller eventually rescues the dog\, forming an unexpected bond.\nThe narrative alternates between Geller’s fragmented\, drug-addled perspective\nand brief\, often humorous\, chapters from the dog’s point of view\, as well as\nfrom the perspective of Doris\, a lonely apartment cleaner who sees potential\nin Geller. These shifts broaden the scope beyond Geller’s self-absorbed\ndespair\, hinting at the possibility of redemption. \nThis event is part of the JCC’s ongoing **Book Series** \, where visiting\nauthors give public talks on their work to bring new ideas and literature to\nthe community. **The cost of this program is $12.50/person**. \n_JCC community events and programs are open to all regardless of faith or\nbackground. DESCRIPTION:Meeting **twice weekly for 90 minutes over 8 weeks** \, our trained and caring\ncoaches\nlead **3rd – 6th graders** through our BRAND-NEW _Hello\, Bold Heart_\ncurriculum that\nexpands our evidence-based lessons and activities to equip girls to build\ntheir _Heart_\n _Power_ —the confidence to boldly share their thoughts\, ideas\, and feelings.\nThis\nseason\, they’ll **learn to use their voices** (even when they are nervous)\,\nand develop\n**life skills** like **resolving conflicts** with others\,**building healthy\nhabits** \, and **deepening**\n**their confidence**. Over the past 25 years\, she has made\ndeeply researched and thought- provoking films about Israel’s identity\,\nhistory\, culture and politics. \nOn April 26\, the AARC and wider Jewish community will have the opportunity for\na conversation with her about her work. (https://lsa.umich.edu/judaic/people/institute-fellows/gilad-\nhalpern.html) a journalist and media historian will lead a conversation with\nAnat\, and there will be time for questions from the audience. \nBoth Anat and Gilad have been Fellows at the University of Michigan’s Frankel\nCenter this year and will soon be leaving town. This event is a rare\nopportunity to meet and learn from “the best documentary creator in Israel\,”\n(according to one of her reviews); another Israeli critic describes her work\nas “mesmerizing\, informative\, and profound.” \nWe ask that participants come having watched the first part of her series\n“Lesson of the Homeland.”. SUMMARY:Jewish Book Series: Milena and Margarete with Gwen Strauss
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at the JCC on **Tuesday\, April 7** from **5-6:30 PM** for an\nin-person visit from Gwen Strauss\, author of _Milena and Margarete: A Love\nStory in Ravensbrück._ \n**_Book Blurb_** \nFrom the moment they met in 1940 in Ravensbrück concentration camp\, Milena\nJesenska and Margarete Buber-Neumann were inseparable. Czech Milena was\nKafka’s first translator and epistolary lover\, and a journalist opposed to\nfascism. A non-conformist\, bi-sexual feminist\, she was way ahead of her time.\nWith the German occupation of Czechoslovakia\, her home became a central\nmeeting place for Jewish refugees. German Margarete\, born to a middle-class\nfamily\, married the son of the Jewish philosopher Martin Buber. But soon swept\nup in the fervor of the Bolshevik Revolution\, she met her second partner\, the\nCommunist Heinz Neumann. Called to Moscow for his “political deviations\,” he\nfell victim to Stalin’s purges while Margarete was exiled to the hell of the\nSoviet gulag. Two years later\, traded by Stalin to Hitler\, she ended up\noutside Berlin in Ravensbrück\, the only concentration camp built for women. \nMilena and Margarete loved each other at the risk of their lives. But in the\npost-war survivors’ accounts\, lesbians were stigmatized\, and survivors kept\nsilent. This book explores those silences\, and finally celebrates two strong\nwomen who never gave up and continue to inspire. As Margaret wrote: “I was\nthankful for having been sent to Ravensbrück\, because it was there I met\nMilena.” \n _JCC community events and programs are open to all regardless of faith or\nbackground.
