SUMMARY:JCC: Book Series - Milena and Margarete: A Love Story in Ravensbrück by Gwen Strauss with Music Accompaniment
DESCRIPTION:Milena and Margarete: A Love Story in Ravensbrück\nClick here to register\nFrom the moment they met in 1940 in Ravensbrück concentration camp\, Milena Jesenska and Margarete Buber-Neumann were inseparable. Czech Milena was Kafka’s first translator and epistolary lover\, and a journalist opposed to fascism. A non-conformist\, bi-sexual feminist\, she was way ahead of her time. With the German occupation of Czechoslovakia\, her home became a central meeting place for Jewish refugees. German Margarete\, born to a middle-class family\, married the son of the Jewish philosopher Martin Buber. But soon swept up in the fervor of the Bolshevik Revolution\, she met her second partner\, the Communist Heinz Neumann. Called to Moscow for his “political deviations\,” he fell victim to Stalin’s purges while Margarete was exiled to the hell of the Soviet gulag. Two years later\, traded by Stalin to Hitler\, she ended up outside Berlin in Ravensbrück\, the only concentration camp built for women. \nMilena and Margarete loved each other at the risk of their lives. But in the post-war survivors’ accounts\, lesbians were stigmatized\, and survivors kept silent. This book explores those silences\, and finally celebrates two strong women who never gave up and continue to inspire. As Margaret wrote: “I was thankful for having been sent to Ravensbrück\, because it was there I met Milena.”

SUMMARY:JCC: Book Series Lunch & Learn: Songs for the Brokenhearted by Ayelet Tsabari
DESCRIPTION:Songs for the Brokenhearted by Ayelet Tsabari\nClick here to register\nJoin us for a delicious kosher lunch at the JCC while hearing from Ayelet Tsabari over Zoom! Lunch is $12.50 per person.\n1950. Thousands of Yemeni Jews have immigrated to the newly founded Israel in search of a better life. In an overcrowded immigrant camp in Rosh Ha’ayin\, Yaqub\, a shy young man\, happens upon Saida\, a beautiful girl singing by the river. In the midst of chaos and uncertainty\, they fall in love. But they weren’t supposed to; Saida is married and has a child\, and a married woman has no place befriending another man. \n1995. Thirty-something Zohara\, Saida’s daughter\, has been living in New York City—a city that feels much less complicated than Israel\, where she grew up wishing that her skin was lighter\, that her illiterate mother’s Yemeni music was quieter\, and that the father who always favored her was alive. She hasn’t looked back since leaving home\, rarely in touch with her mother or sister\, Lizzie\, and missing out on her nephew Yoni’s childhood. But when Lizzie calls to tell her their mother has died\, she gets on a plane to Israel with no return ticket. \nSoon Zohara finds herself on an unexpected path that leads to shocking truths about her family—including dangers that lurk for impressionable young men and secrets that force her to question everything she thought she knew about her parents\, her heritage\, and her own future.

SUMMARY:JCC: Lunch & Learn + We Are Black Jews with Roni Malkai
DESCRIPTION:We Are Black Jews by Roni Malkai\nClick here to register\nJoin us for a delicious kosher lunch at the JCC while hearing from Roni Malkai over Zoom! Lunch is $12.50 per person.\nWe Are Black Jews: Ethiopian Jewry and the Journey to Equality in Israel is a deeply moving memoir by Roni Fantanesh Malkai that blends personal experience with collective history. With honesty\, clarity\, and grace\, Roni shares her own story\, beginning with a perilous journey on foot from Ethiopia to Sudan as a child\, and continuing through her family’s aliya to Israel. Her voice is both intimate and powerful\, offering readers a rare firsthand account of what it means to live at the intersection of Black and Jewish identity. \nThrough her storytelling\, Roni brings to life the history and resilience of the Beta Israel community: their unwavering devotion to Judaism over centuries of exile\, and their struggle for dignity and recognition in modern Israeli society. She does not shy away from confronting painful truths such as racism\, marginalization\, and cultural displacement – but she does so with hope and a deep belief in the power of belonging. We Are Black Jews is not just a personal journey – it’s an invitation to communities all over the world to grow in our understanding and embrace the full diversity of the Jewish people. \nRoni Fantanesh Malkai holds an MA in Public Policy and Government (with honors) from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem\, and an LLB in Law from Tel Aviv University. She has served as Director of the Public Forum for Youth Villages and Boarding Schools and as Spokeswoman for the Ministry of Welfare & Social Services. Malkai is a lawyer and a public figure in Israel and a media professional regularly contributing to Israeli media and focusing on social issues. She also writes for Haaretz\, where she explores topics related to social change and conflict. Her experience as a journalist and news anchor at Channel 10 sharpened her skills in communication\, storytelling\, and public engagement. \nRoni Fantanesh Malkai was born in the village of Wufargif\, located in the Welkait region of Ethiopia. She was just two and a half years old when her family left their village to begin the arduous journey through Sudan\, a path taken by many Ethiopian Jews during that period. Roni’s work We Are Black Jews is endorsed by the President of Israel\, Isaac Herzog who is Malkai’s former boss at the Ministry of Welfare. He called it “a supremely human story\, one that has a great deal to teach Israeli society\, and indeed any human society”. In addition to her writing\, Roni is frequently invited to speak at events and lead training sessions on social justice\, race\, and equality\, offering valuable insights that resonate within a variety of communities.

SUMMARY:JCC: Book Series - Six Days in Bombay by Alka Joshi
DESCRIPTION:Six Days in Bombay by Alka Joshi\n\nRegister Here\n\n\nSet in 1937\, the novel follows Sona\, a young Anglo-Indian nurse\, as she travels from Bombay to Istanbul\, Prague\, Florence\, Paris\, and London to uncover the mystery behind a famous painter’s death. Sona\, born to an Indian mother and abandoned by her British father\, is a nurse in Bombay who struggles with her dual identity. When Mira Novak\, a famous half-Indian painter\, arrives at the hospital after a miscarriage\, Sona becomes captivated by her stories of worldly adventure and reckless love. Over the course of a week\, the women develop a special bond and when Mira dies under mysterious circumstances\, Sona immediately falls under suspicion.\n\nThe key to proving Sona’s innocence may lie in a cryptic note and four paintings Mira left in her care\, sending her on a mission to visit the painter’s former friends and lovers across a tumultuous Europe teetering on war. As Sona leaves her quiet\, sheltered life in Bombay behind\, she’s thrust into cultures and situations she’s never had to face\,\nlearning valuable lessons\, growing in her independence\, and confronting her own painful past. She also learns her beloved Mira’s charming façade hid a complicated\, troubled soul. \nAlka Joshi is the internationally bestselling author of the Jaipur Trilogy: The Henna Artist\, The Secret Keeper of Jaipur and The Perfumist of Paris. She has a BA from Stanford University and an MFA from California College of Arts and spent 30 years in the fields of advertising and marketing before pivoting to a full-time career as a novelist. Her fourth novel\, Six Days in Bombay (4/15/25)\, is a sweeping travelogue of a young Indian women’s journey from 1937 India to a turbulent Europe as she comes into her own. Alka has spoken to well over 900 bookclubs\, literary festivals\, colleges and corporations about her writing journey.

SUMMARY:JCC: Book Series - Fagin the Thief by Allison Epstein
DESCRIPTION:Fagin the Thief by Allison Epstein\nRegister Here!\nLong before Oliver Twist stumbled onto the scene\, Jacob Fagin was scratching out a life for himself in the dark alleys of nineteenth-century London. Born in the Jewish enclave of Stepney shortly after his father was executed as a thief\, Jacob and his open-minded mother\, Leah\, are each other’s whole world. But Jacob’s prospects are forever altered when a light-fingered pickpocket takes Jacob under his wing and teaches him a trade that pays far better than the neighborhood boys could possibly dream.\n\nStriking out on his own\, Jacob familiarizes himself with London’s highest value neighborhoods while forging his own path in the shadows. But everything changes when he adopts an aspiring teenage thief named Bill Sikes\, whose mercurial temper poses a danger to himself and anyone foolish enough to cross him. Along the way\, Jacob’s found family expands to include his closest friend\, Nancy\, and his greatest protege\, the Artful Dodger. But as Bill’s ambition soars and a major robbery goes awry\, Jacob is forced to decide what he really stands for—and what a life is worth.\n\nAllison Epstein earned her MFA in fiction from Northwestern University and a BA in creative writing from the University of Michigan. A Michigan native\, she now lives in Chicago\, where she enjoys good theater\, bad puns\, and fancy jackets. She is the author of historical novels including A Tip for the Hangman\, Let the Dead Bury the Dead\, and Fagin the Thief.
