SUMMARY:Orientalism and Monotheism: Renan on Judaism and Islam
DESCRIPTION:Lecture by Guy G. Stroumsa\, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem\, followed by roundtable conversation with John M. Efron\, University of California\, Berkeley \n \nThroughout the nineteenth century\, the birth of what one may call philologia orientalis and the discovery of the linguistic similarities between Sanskrit and European languages radically transformed the perception of the East\, much weakening the idea of a family relationship between Judaism\, Christianity and Islam. The case of Ernest Renan (1823-1892) is here emblematic. The lecture will survey Renan’s conception of Judaism and Islam\, through his invention of the category of “Semitic religions.” We shall reflect on its consequences on the study of monotheism among historians of religions\, as well as on the development of anti-Semitism and Islamophobia in the last decades of the century. \nAdvance Registration Required: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/7016105515609/WN_oYvSLryURveHxXW0tu-28Q

SUMMARY:Sister Scholars: The Emergence of Orthodox Girls' Education in Interwar Poland
DESCRIPTION:West Bloomfield Lecture Series/JCC of Metro Detroit SAJE event \nNaomi Seidman\, Frankel Institute Fellow \nSister Scholars: The Emergence of Orthodox Girls’ Education in Interwar Poland \nThis lecture will trace the revolution in the name of tradition enacted by Sarah Schenirer\, a divorced seamstress with an eighth-grade education\, who created a girls’ school system\, Bais Yaakov\, that rescued Orthodox Jewish society at a moment of peril. Bais Yaakov continues to thrive in hundreds of locations today\, and Bais Yaakov students consider themselves the spiritual daughters of Schenirer. \nNaomi Seidman is a Fellow at the Frankel Institute for Judaic Studies during the 2020-21 year\, and the Jackman Professor of the Arts at the University of Toronto. Her book on Sarah Schenirer and the Bais Yaakov movement won a National Jewish Book Award for Women’s Studies in 2019. \n

SUMMARY:Jewish Multilingualism in the Midwest: Yiddish Translations of Urban Experience
DESCRIPTION:Jewish Multilingualism in the Midwest: Yiddish Translations of Urban Experience \nMellon Sawyer Seminar: Sites of Translation in the Multilingual Midwest \nSeminar coordinator: Maya Barzilai (UM Associate Professor of Middle East Studies and Judaic Studies) \nVisiting participants: Mikhl Yashinsky (Actor\, playwright\, director\, and Yiddisht)\, Jessica Kirzane (Scholar\, translator\, instructor of Yiddish\, University of Chicago)\, Erin Faigin (History Gradate Student\, University of Wisconsin-Madison)\, \nLocal participants: Julian Levinson (UM Professor of American Jewish Studies)\, Mikhail Krutikov (UM Professor of Slavic and Judaic Studies). \nThe presence of Jews in the big cities of the Midwest (Detroit\, Chicago\, Cincinnati\, or Milwaukee) has been studied primarily through the lens of urban history\, focusing on the post-war period. The linguistic dimension of the Jewish encounter with the Midwest deserves\, however\, further scholarly attention. This seminar is dedicated to Yiddish (and some Hebrew) translations of urban experience in the Midwest. It dovetails with the Frankel Institute for Advanced Judaic Studies theme year\, “Translating Jewish Cultures.” \nThe influx of Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe to the United States in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries catalyzed the development of an American Yiddish culture\, one that flourished particularly in the first decades of the twentieth century. While the majority of cultural production took place in New York City and its suburbs\, where most Jewish immigrants preferred to reside\, other big cities in the United States\, including Midwestern ones\, also attracted native Yiddish speakers. Between 1924 and 1937\, for instance\, a Yiddish-language theater operated in Detroit\, attracting major Yiddish stage stars from across the United States. The city also drew well-known Yiddish writers such as Moyshe Leyb-Halperin and Moyshe Nadir. To this day\, the language continues to be studied at the University of Michigan; it is an ideal location for a seminar to reconstruct various histories of translating Detroit\, as well as other Midwestern sites\, both into and out of Yiddish.

SUMMARY:Mellon Sawyer Seminar: Ezra Korman\, Poet of My City
DESCRIPTION:Performance by Mikhl Yashinsky\, followed by Q&A with Mikhail Krutikov\nThe author and anthologist Ezra Korman was born in Kiev and later adopted Detroit as his home\, becoming the city’s dean of Yiddish letters. Mikhl Yashinsky\, born in Detroit a few decades later\, has claimed an inheritance of thought and poetry in the author’s life and work. At this event\, Yashinsky shares that inheritance and performs Korman’s Yiddish poetry in his own translation\, inviting us to visit libraries and dusty synagogue vaults\, guiding us through the author’s possessions\, his voice\, his writing\, his grave…\nMikhl Yashinsky has taught Yiddish at the University of Michigan\, YIVO\, and The Workers Circle\, and is known to Yiddish theatrical audiences for his performances in Joel Grey’s production of Fiddler on the Roof and the title role of The Sorceress.

SUMMARY:Mourning and Mitzvah with Cantor Emerita Annie Rose
DESCRIPTION:With peaceful\, loving thoughts to everyone in these uncertain times\, Cantor Emerita Annie Rose invites you to participate in a 5-session class entitled Mourning and Mitzvah\, beginning on Thursday\, January 7. \nMourning and Mitzvah is designed for those who have lost a loved one recently or in years past\, those who would like to learn more about Jewish mourning practice\, and even those who have taken the class before and want to revisit the topic. During the five sessions\, we explore Jewish customs and traditions for mourning family members and friends\, comforting other people who are grieving\, approaching end-of-life issues\, and more. Each year has been a little different\, depending on the experiences and interests of the class. \nCantor Emerita Annie Rose has been teaching the class at TBE for many years\, and despite the challenging topic\, each year the sessions have provided a rewarding journey for all of us. This is the first time we have offered the class on Zoom. \nOur text is Mourning and Mitzvah: A Guided Journal for Walking the Mourner’s Path Through Grief to Healing (25th Anniversary Edition) 3rd Edition by Rabbi Anne Brener\, available through local or online booksellers. \nRegistration required: Please contact Cantor Emerita Annie Rose by email with questions or to register: cantorannie@gmail.com
