SUMMARY:BIC Pirke Avot with Rabbi Dobrusin
DESCRIPTION:Rabbi Dobrusin will facilitate “Zoom” discussions on the classic Rabbinic text: Pirke Avot. While the title is usually translated as “Teachings of the Sages”\, a more interesting translation is “Chapters of Fundamental Principles.” Pirke Avot consists of short rabbinic statements concerning ethics\, faith and interpersonal relationships. Reading Pirke Avot helps us focus on the values and principles which guide our lives. We will study the text in English referring occasionally to the Hebrew. The text can be found in the Shabbat morning Sim Shalom siddur. \nFor more information or the Zoom password\, please contact Sam Zielinski.

SUMMARY:UM Frankel Center Event: The Feeling of History: Islam\, Romanticism\, and Andalusia
DESCRIPTION:In today’s world\, the lines between Europe and the Middle East\, between Christian Europeans and Muslim immigrants in their midst\, seem to be hardening. Alarmist editorials compare the arrival of Muslim refugees with the “Muslim conquest of 711\,” warning that Europe will be called on to defend its borders. Violence and paranoia are alive and well in Fortress Europe. \nAgainst this xenophobic tendency\, The Feeling of History examines the idea of Andalucismo—a modern tradition founded on the principle that contemporary Andalusia is connected in vitally important ways with medieval Islamic Iberia. Charles Hirschkind explores the works and lives of writers\, thinkers\, poets\, artists\, and activists\, and he shows how\, taken together\, they constitute an Andalusian sensorium. Hirschkind also carefully traces the various itineraries of Andalucismo\, from colonial and anticolonial efforts to contemporary movements supporting immigrant rights. The Feeling of History offers a nuanced view into the way people experience their own past\, while also bearing witness to a philosophy of engaging the Middle East that experiments with alternative futures. \nCharles Hirschkind is associate professor of anthropology at the University of California\, Berkeley. His research interests concern religious practice\, media technologies\, and emergent forms of political community in the urban Middle East and Europe. His published works include\, The Ethical Soundscape: Cassette Sermons and Islamic Counterpublics (Columbia 2006)\, Powers of the Secular Modern: Talal Asad and his Interlocutors (co-edited with David Scott\, Stanford 2005)\, and The Feeling for History: Islam\, Romanticism\, and Andalusia (Chicago 2020) \nFlora Hastings is a PhD candidate in Social and Cultural Anthropology at SOAS\, University of London\, and a freelance journalist. Her research interests include Jewish-Muslim relations in contemporary Barcelona\, progressive forms of Judaism and Islam\, neo-liberalism\, migration and contemporary European identity\, diasporic identity\, and modernisation processes. Flora is also a coordinator of the Jewish-Muslim Research Network. \n  \nAdvance Registration Required: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/5116100381642/WN_WM3BO8GgTwGeJ49ZH9Z7iQ

SUMMARY:Mira Awad: A Concert/Conversation
DESCRIPTION:The Eastern Michigan University Center for Jewish Studies Presents Mira Awad: A Concert/Conversation \nThis FREE performance is Sunday\, March 7\, 3:00 PM EST on: \nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/EasternMichU \nor \nYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/emichigan08 \nSinger\, songwriter\, actress\, artist\, and content creator\, Mira Awad has long been a major figure in Israeli and Palestinian life and culture. But Mira Awad is also a forceful activist for women’s rights\, for equal citizenship for Palestinians living in Israel\, for a two-state solution\, and for environmental awareness. Her eloquent advocacy for dialogue and co-existence\, for peace and solidarity\, has brought considerable praise (and some criticism) across the political spectrum. She calls her music Arabic Fusion\, a combination of styles and sounds that weaves together Arabic language with Western harmonies. Awad has worked with a multitude of artists\, including Noa\, with whom she participated as a finalist in the 2009 Eurovision song contest. For this performance\, she will be accompanied by Israeli guitarist\, Shay Alon.Awad–colorAwad–colorAwad–B&WMira Awad \nFor more information contact: jewish.studies@emich.edu
