DESCRIPTION:Join us Tuesday\, May 13th\, at 7:30pm for a zoom event hosted by the Federation’s Maimonides Society for physicians. Mark Fendrick\, MD\, PhD (Schools of Medicine and Public Health\, University of Michigan) and Michael Chernew\, PhD (Harvard Medical School) will be speaking on a panel moderated by Jonathan Trobe\, MD. \nMichael Chernew\, PhD\, is the Leonard D. Schaeffer Professor of Health Care Policy and Director of the Healthcare Markets and Regulation Laboratory at Harvard Medical School. His PhD is in economics from Stanford University. He is the chair of the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) and has served on several advisory panels for the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. He is a member of the Congressional Budget Office’s Panel of Health Advisors and the Massachusetts Health Connector Board. A recipient of multiple awards for his work in healthcare policy\, he focuses his research on improving the healthcare system through improvements to benefit designs\, payment models\, and regulation of both private and public health care markets\, including the Medicare Advantage program. \nMark Fendrick\, MD\, PhD is Professor of Internal Medicine in the School of Medicine and Professor of Health Management and Policy in the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan. His bachelor’s degree is from the University of Pennsylvania and his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. Residency in internal medicine was at the University of Pennsylvania\, where he was a fellow in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program. He conceptualized Value-Based Insurance Design (V-BID) and currently directs the V-BID Center at the University of Michigan\, which advocates for development\, implementation\, and evaluation of innovative health benefit plans. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine\, serves on the Medicare Coverage Advisory Committee\, and has presented testimony before the U.S. Senate Committee on Health\, Education\, Labor and Pensions\, the U.S. House of Representatives Ways and Means Subcommittee on Health\, and the U.S. Senate Committee on Armed Services Subcommittee on Personnel. \nLearn more about the Maimonides Society here. \nRegister here

DESCRIPTION:Jewish Storytime with PJ Library (AADL)\nAttendance is free and open to the public! \nDates and Locations:\nSunday\, Feb 2- Westgate Library (2503 Jackson Ave)\nSunday\, Mar 16- Mallets Creek Library (3090 E Eisenhower Pkwy)\nSunday\, Apr 6- Mallets Creek (3090 E Eisenhower Pkwy)\nSunday\, Jun 1- Westgate Library (2503 Jackson Ave) \nEach date will consist of three sessions:\n1PM (Ages 5-7) English Story time and activities.\n2PM (Ages 3-7) Hebrew Story time and activities.\n3PM (Ages 2-4) English Story time and activities. \nWe really hope these sessions will enable us to broaden our reach to audiences who less frequently engage in our mainstream Jewish institutions such as the JCC and the synagogues\, giving young children access to Hebrew immersion. \nSessions will be led by our ShinShinim\, Danielle and Lahav\, under supervision of our Israel and Overseas Manager\, Amichay Findling.

Food is kosher under supervision of the Detroit Vaad. \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Third Annual Pillar Award Honoree: Nancy N. Margolis\nFederation is thrilled to honor Nancy N. Margolis with the third annual Pillar Award for exceptional contributions to the Jewish community in the areas of Federation’s guiding pillars: Philanthropy\, Engagement and Convening. \nNancy began her career as the deputy director of Washtenaw County’s anti-poverty program\, where she was a founder of The Corner Health Center in Ypsilanti. After that\, Nancy moved to becoming the Executive Director of the JCC of Greater Ann Arbor\, and then Executive Director of the Jewish Federation of Greater Ann Arbor. \nShe is currently the Founder and Executive Director of Embracing our Differences Michigan\, an art and education program that promotes and celebrates diversity and inclusion. The Embracing Our Differences exhibits can be seen at Ann Arbor’s Gallup Park and Ypsilanti’s Riverside Park. \nIn addition to her professional roles\, Nancy has served as a Trustee of Washtenaw Community College\, a Member of the WCC Foundation\, and a Trustee of the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation. \nNancy has been honored by various organizations over the years\, including: Woman of Achievement from the Anti-Defamation League of Michigan (1999); President’s Award from the JCC of Greater Ann Arbor (2008\, 2011); Bernstein Award from Jewish Family Services of Washtenaw County (2015); and Shero from the Washtenaw Community College Women’s Council (2023). \nNancy was married to Philip Margolis\, MD\, who was a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Psychiatry at University of Michigan from 1959 until Philip’s death in 2020. She has four children and eight grandchildren (six of whom attended the Early Childhood Center at the JCC)\, and one great-granddaughter who soon will be at the ECC. They live on the Northside of Ann Arbor with their three kids Lyla (14)\, Avery (12)\, and foster son Liam (17). Alisa is a kindergarten teacher at Bryant Elementary school and will graduate this winter with her Master’s Degree in Reading. Kevin works construction for Bloom General Contracting\, and also owns Moonwinks Cafe and Tavern in Dixboro. They are members of Temple Beth Emeth\, where they were married in 2008. \nSince moving to Ann Arbor in 2011\, Laura and Josh have experienced the warmth of this community firsthand. Their children\, Elena (9) and Julian (7)\, have found friends\, learning\, and a sense of belonging through their involvement with the JCC\, Beth Israel Congregation\, and Camp Tavor.
