DESCRIPTION:Take a journey through the lens of a leading travel journalist to learn about some of the most interesting and off-the-beaten path Jewish communities around the world.  We’ll learn about Jewish life on five different continents in such fascinating places as Curacao\, South Africa\, Norway\,  Vietnam\, Barbados and three of the most historic synagogues in the United States.   This highly visual presentation will explore the survival and resilience of Jewish life in places you might least expect to find it. \nDan Fellner\, the presenter\, is an eight-time Fulbright Fellow who has taught journalism and communications at universities in Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia.  He has published more than 150 travel articles in such publications as the Jerusalem Post\, The Forward\, USA Today\, Hadassah Magazine and the Arizona Republic.  All of his published work can viewed at DanFellner.com.

Representative Slotkin will discuss\, among other things\, growing up Jewish on a farm in Holly\, Michigan; working as a CIA analyst who did three tours in Iraq alongside the US military; and serving in the US House. Representative Slotkin is a member of the House Committee on Homeland Security—where she chairs the Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence—and the House Committee on Armed Services. She will consider such matters as the resurgence of antisemitism in the twenty-first century (both in the US and abroad)\, America’s involvement in the Middle East\, and the importance of Israel to US foreign policy. \nThis presentation is the first\, on-campus\, Center for Jewish Studies event since the beginning of Covid. There will be social distancing\, and all audience members will be required to wear masks. Dr. Simon will explore the legacy of the hatred of Jews during the Holocaust and how and why it continues to impact the globe. But Mira Awad is also a forceful activist for women’s rights\, for equal citizenship for Palestinians living in Israel\, for a two-state solution\, and for environmental awareness. Her eloquent advocacy for dialogue and co-existence\, for peace and solidarity\, has brought considerable praise (and some criticism) across the political spectrum. She calls her music Arabic Fusion\, a combination of styles and sounds that weaves together Arabic language with Western harmonies. Awad has worked with a multitude of artists\, including Noa\, with whom she participated as a finalist in the 2009 Eurovision song contest. DESCRIPTION:On the eve of International Holocaust Remembrance Day\, the Eastern Michigan University Center for Jewish Studies will host Holly Huffnagle\, U.S. Director for Combating Antisemitism for the American Jewish Committee (AJC). In her role at AJC\, Ms. Huffnagle spearheads the global organization’s response to antisemitism in the United States and its efforts to better protect the Jewish community.
