DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, January 21\, 7pm\, Temple Beth Emeth\, Social Hall\, 2309 Packard\, Ann Arbor \nDid you know that thousands of homes in Washtenaw County have racist restrictive covenants attached to them?  There are also covenants containing anti-semitic restrictions.  Although no longer enforceable\, they are connected to ongoing inequities\, provide an opportunity to explore ways to repair the harms they caused\, and can be removed by current homeowners. \nPlease join the Social Action Committees of Temple Beth Emeth and Beth Israel Congregation to learn how each of us can help Justice InDeed document the history and legacy of housing discrimination in our community.  Justice InDeed is a community collaborative project that seeks to better understand and repair the harms done by racially restrictive covenants in Washtenaw County. \nAt this in-person session\, we will learn how to identify and transcribe racially restrictive covenants.  We will work together to build a database and map for affected properties all over the County\, helping us better reckon with our collective history. \nNo experience is necessary\, just bring your enthusiasm and willingness to help make a difference in our community!  Please bring a laptop or tablet if you can.  See you there! \nRegistration is required and can be done directly at https://www.templebethemeth.org/event/justice-indeed-training.html.  For more information\, contact Michael Appel at mappel1961@gmail.com or Cathy Marshall at happycath@comcast.net.

Dr. Lantz will give a short talk after services\, then host a q&a session for those wanting to learn more about the state-level legal landscape for abortion post Dobbs decision; what we know from research about the many impacts of restrictive abortion policy on women and families;  as well as recent public policy strategies\, with a focus on state ballot initiatives and also some policy predictions regarding the new Trump administration. \nPaula Lantz\, PhD\, MS is the James B. Hudak Professor of Health Policy and director of undergraduate programs at the University of Michigan’s Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy. She also is a University Professor of Diversity and Social Transformation and professor of health management and policy in the School of Public Health. Lantz\, a social demographer/social epidemiologist\, teaches and conducts research regarding the role of public policy in improving population health and reducing social disparities in health. An elected member of the National Academy of Medicine\, Dr. Lantz is currently engaged in research regarding reproductive health policy in the U.S. and the relationship between housing policy and health.

St. Antoine Collegiate Professor of Law at the University of Michigan\, teaches the law\, theory\, and history of the U.S. Constitution.  He is a former Rhodes Scholar\, a former clerk for Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg\, and\, for his work on the relationship between history and constitutional interpretation\, the co-recipient of the first-ever Guggenheim Fellowship in Constitutional Studies.  He is also a founding member of the Academic Freedom Alliance\, a senior editorial adviser of the Journal of American Constitutional History\, and a member of the Board of Advisors of Protect Democracy\, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to fighting threats to free and fair self-government.  From 2011 to 2013 he served as legal advisor to the Board of Regents of the University of Michigan\, and from 2012 to 2014 he served as President of the Hebrew Day School of Ann Arbor.
