SUMMARY:UM Frankel Center Event: Translating the Sacred Word
DESCRIPTION:Aviya Kushner\, Author and Language Columnist at The Forward \nIn her prize-winning book “The Grammar of God” (Spiegel & Grau\, 2015)\, Aviya Kushner recounts her experience of reading the Hebrew Bible in multiple English translations and the surprises and revelations she encountered along the way. Drawing from this book\, as well as her current project on the great commentator\, poet\, and translator Rabbi Avraham Ibn Ezra\, she will share with us her insights on the history of biblical translation and the lives of translators. \nAviya Kushner’s is The Forward’s language columnist\, and her essays on translation have appeared in “The Wall Street Journal\,” “The Wilson Quarterly\,” “Poets & Writers\,” and “Harvard Review.” Her debut collection of poems\, Wolf Lamb Bomb\, which engages deeply with the Book of Isaiah\, will be published by Orison Books in 2021.
