For Beth Israel Students:
Eli M. Ladin Israel Teen Trip Scholarship Fund

Eli M. Ladin Israel Scholarship Fund was created by Lily Ladin in memory of her husband. Partial scholarships towards a recognized Israel summer or year-round program in Israel will be awarded to teenagers from Beth Israel  Congregation who have demonstrated a commitment to Jewish life and Israel. Following their trip, participants are asked to write a short article about their experiences. This scholarship may be awarded only once. Sixty eight students have received scholarships since the program’s inception.

The Ladin family joined Beth Israel when they arrived in Ann Arbor in 1965. Eli had been an active member of the Board of Directors over the years.  Born in Israel, Eli maintained a deep bond with the country throughout his lifetime.  He promoted enthusiasm and good will for Israel, especially in young people.  He believed visits to Israel would be one way of accomplishing this.

Interested teenagers are asked to request an application form from the Beth Israel office. Contact execdir@bethisrael-aa.org.  Scholarship applications must be submitted by February 1, 2010 for programs starting in the summer of  2010. Students are notified within two weeks.

Study in Israel: Apply by Jan. 20

The Bronfman Youth Fellowships in Israel (BYFI) has opened registration for its 24th summer program. The fellowships send 26 North American teenagers to Israel for five weeks of intellectually engaging summer study during which they experience a shared sense of Jewish community. The program educated and inspires young Jews from diverse backgrounds to become active participants and leaders in Jewish culture throughout their lives and to contribute their talents and vision to the Jewish community and to the world at large. The program was founded by Edgar M. Bronfman and is funded by the Samuel Bronfman Foundation, which focuses on projects dedicated to fostering a Jewish renaissance. The foundation is a major supporter of Hillel: The Foundation for Campus Jewish Life, the Curriculum Initiative and MyJewishLearning.com. Applications for the 2010 fellowship are available online at www.bronfman.org and must be submitted online by January 20. American and Canadian high school students who will be in the 12th grade in the fall of 2010 may apply. Contact information: Ava Charne, ava.charne@byfi.org or (518) 475-7212.
